Competency-based interviews are one of the most common formats used by employers today. The goal? To understand not just what you’ve achieved, but how you achieved it.
So how do you give strong, memorable answers?
Use the STAR method:
S – Situation: Briefly set the scene.
T – Task: Explain the challenge or responsibility you had.
A – Action: Focus on the specific actions you took.
R – Result: Share the positive outcome (ideally with numbers or impact).
Example: Instead of saying “I’m good at problem solving,” walk the interviewer through a real scenario where you identified an issue, took action, and delivered measurable results.
Top tips:
Prepare 4–5 strong examples from your experience that show key skills (leadership, teamwork, problem solving, resilience).
Keep your answers concise but structured.
Don’t forget the “Result” – it’s often what sticks in the interviewer’s mind.
Remember: competency-based interviews aren’t about rehearsed perfection. They’re about showing evidence of your skills in action.
